{"id":515,"date":"2010-09-17T09:53:11","date_gmt":"2010-09-17T16:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mpsharp.com\/blog\/?p=515"},"modified":"2010-09-17T09:53:11","modified_gmt":"2010-09-17T16:53:11","slug":"allway-sync-now-supports-amazon-s3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mpsharp.com\/?p=515","title":{"rendered":"Allway Sync now supports Amazon S3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So I&#8217;ve been using <a href=\"http:\/\/allwaysync.com\/\">AllWay <\/a>Sync tool for a couple\u00a0 years now to keep laptops synchronized (free for home use).\u00a0\u00a0 I recently downloaded the latest version to help me back up the HTPC harddisk before pulling it out and moving it to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/NETGEAR-ReadyNAS-4-Bay-2TB-500GB\/dp\/B000R9DB5K\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ReadyNAS NV+<\/a> as an iSCSI device (a story for another time).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In the back of my mind, I&#8217;ve also been contemplating various offsite backup strategies.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 My photo and home video collection is nearing 1TB, and after seeing the San Mateo gas fire, I&#8217;m a little more motivated to get those offsite.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out the latest version of AllWay now supports <a title=\"http:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/s3\/\" href=\"http:\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amazon S3<\/a>!\u00a0 This basically gives you an unlimited storage solution for <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">$1.20<\/span>$1.11\/GB\/yr using <a href=\"http:\/\/aws.amazon.com\/s3\/#pricing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S3 RRS<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Or <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">$10<\/span> $9 a month for a TB of backup.\u00a0\u00a0 The beauty is you only pay for what you use, so 250GB is only <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">$2.50<\/span> $2.25 a month, or $27\/yr.\u00a0 The AllWay tool can do scheduled synchronizations and after the initial sync, it only pushes new files and deletions.<\/p>\n<p>Now the Internet backup providers like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carbonite.com\/en\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carbonite<\/a> are running right as low as $55\/yr for unlimited backup, so you may be able to pay a little less for a more feature rich solution if you are over .5TB but if you have multiple PC&#8217;s (or a NAS).\u00a0\u00a0 That said $55\/yr only gets you 1 PC and I don&#8217;t know if it will backup network shares.\u00a0 Furthermore they don&#8217;t recommend the $55 solution for anyone with more than 200GB.\u00a0 In fact, in their <a href=\"http:\/\/carbonite.custhelp.com\/app\/answers\/detail\/a_id\/1519\/kw\/carbonite%20and%20carbonite%20pro%20comparison\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAQ<\/a> they mention something about bandwidth throttling at 35 and 200 gig.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Amazon has been consistently dropping the price on S3 storage every year, so it will only get cheaper.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Allway includes integration with Windows Task Manager, so scheduled backups are a breeze.\u00a0\u00a0 As soon as I get all the drives reorganized, this is definitely the next task on the list.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So I&#8217;ve been using AllWay Sync tool for a couple\u00a0 years now to keep laptops synchronized (free for home use).\u00a0\u00a0 I recently downloaded the latest version to help me back up the HTPC harddisk before pulling it out and moving it to the ReadyNAS NV+ as an iSCSI device (a story for another time).\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In&hellip;
